Two systems are involved. A carrier lock is a record held against the IMEI that names the network the phone may activate on — on iPhones and current flagships there is no code, the record simply changes. A code lock is the older system: the phone prompts for an NCK or MCK that is derived from the IMEI, and typing it writes the unlock into the handset.
Which one applies depends on the brand, the model year and who sold the device — which is why every page here starts with a check instead of a promise.
