Check Apple, Samsung, Google, HP, Dell and Acer warranty status, coverage end date and repair eligibility by IMEI or serial. Confirm the purchase date.
Warranty status is the cheapest way to date a device and the fastest way to spot a refurbished unit sold as new. The estimated purchase date, the coverage end date and the repair / service eligibility come straight from the manufacturer's own lookup, so they disagree with a seller's story more often than you would expect — and they are the evidence a marketplace asks for when a "new" phone arrives out of warranty.
Apple lookups also return the telephone technical support window and whether the purchase date is validated or estimated, which is what distinguishes a genuine retail unit from a replacement device. HP, Dell and Acer laptop warranties are covered too, since serial numbers from those vendors are traded in exactly the same way.

It is either validated (the vendor has the retail invoice date) or estimated (the vendor infers it from the first activation or shipment). Apple marks which one applies. An estimated date can be a few weeks off, which is why a device bought on launch day can look like it was purchased later.
Sometimes. Replacement and refurbished units appear as a fresh serial number with a short coverage window instead of a full year, and the part number changes to a replacement prefix. If the coverage started recently but the model is two years old, the device is almost certainly a service replacement.
For Apple, coverage follows the device, not the buyer, so the remaining warranty is usable by whoever holds the phone — subject to the original proof of purchase for service. Carrier insurance and retailer extensions usually do not transfer.
Either the identifier was mistyped, or the device is not in the vendor database (grey import, replacement unit not yet registered, or a counterfeit chassis). Re-check the digits from Settings → General → About before drawing a conclusion.
No. The IMEI or serial number printed on the box, the SIM tray or the invoice is enough. That is what makes these checks usable for remote purchases and bulk stock audits.
