Motorola Unlock Eligibility and Warranty Checks by IMEI

Motorola is not one lock system. Retail "unlocked" handsets are already free, carrier-branded devices are locked by the operator, and the bootloader path is a completely separate thing that has nothing to do with a network unlock. The useful first step is therefore the same as everywhere else: read the record against the IMEI before buying anything.

Short answer. Start with the $0.03 check to confirm the lock and the carrier. If you are the account holder and the device meets the carrier’s conditions, the unlock is normally free — the operator’s own page is Motorola support. If you are not, or the carrier refuses, the record has to be released from the supply side, and the services at the bottom of this page are the ones that apply.

What the message actually means

A carrier-locked Motorola is released by the carrier's activation policy — not by a code and not by unlocking the bootloader.

Motorola's own database also exposes carrier, country, software channel and warranty status, which tells you what kind of device you are actually holding (retail, carrier, refurbished).

The phone is not damaged and it is not stolen by default: the manufacturer holds an activation policy against the IMEI that names the carrier the device may activate on. Until that record changes, every other SIM is refused at activation — Wi-Fi keeps working, which is why a locked handset can look perfectly healthy in a shop.

What you are seeing

Step 1 — check before you spend

  1. The Motorola carrier, country and software check — shows which carrier and channel the device belongs to.
  2. The Motorola warranty pro check for coverage and refurbishment flags.
  3. The carrier and SIM lock check ($0.03) plus the blacklist check before purchase.

Step 2 — what the carrier’s policy says

Motorola releases carrier-locked devices through the carrier that sold them. The bootloader unlock programme on Motorola's site is unrelated to the SIM lock and does not remove it.

Warranty follows the original sale and is readable from the IMEI.

Published requirements

The current wording is always on the carrier’s page: Motorola support.

Step 3 — if you qualify, get the free unlock

  1. Read carrier, country and warranty by IMEI.
  2. If it is carrier-locked, order that carrier's unlock tier.
  3. Do not confuse this with the bootloader unlock programme.

Step 4 — if you do not qualify

Carrier-branded Motorola handsets from a resale lot are the standard case; the carrier-specific tiers apply. The Motorola checks above tell you which one before you spend.
