How to Unlock a Google Pixel — Carrier Records and the USB Unlock Route

Pixel unlocking depends entirely on where the phone was bought. A Pixel from the Google Store is unlocked; a Pixel from Verizon or AT&T carries that carrier's lock; and a Pixel bought through a carrier in Mexico or Japan carries that operator's. Some Pixel models can additionally be released over USB, which is a different service with a different price and different failure modes.

Short answer. Start with the $0.03 check to confirm the lock and the carrier. If you are the account holder and the device meets the carrier’s conditions, the unlock is normally free — the operator’s own page is Google Pixel support. If you are not, or the carrier refuses, the record has to be released from the supply side, and the services at the bottom of this page are the ones that apply.

What the message actually means

The carrier lock is an activation policy against the IMEI. The USB route is a separate mechanism that works on specific model generations.

Google's OEM unlocking toggle in Developer Options is bootloader-related and does not remove a carrier SIM lock.

The phone is not damaged and it is not stolen by default: the manufacturer holds an activation policy against the IMEI that names the carrier the device may activate on. Until that record changes, every other SIM is refused at activation — Wi-Fi keeps working, which is why a locked handset can look perfectly healthy in a shop.

What you are seeing

Step 1 — check before you spend

  1. Settings → About phone → see the carrier field and the model (Pixel 7, 8, 9…).
  2. The Pixel carrier and warranty check shows the original carrier and country.
  3. The carrier and SIM lock check ($0.03) before buying.

Step 2 — what the carrier’s policy says

Google sells unlocked devices; carrier-sold Pixels are locked by that carrier and released by it. Google support will not remove a carrier lock.

Bootloader unlocking is available on retail devices but does not affect the SIM lock.

Published requirements

The current wording is always on the carrier’s page: Google Pixel support.

Step 3 — if you qualify, get the free unlock

  1. Read the original carrier by IMEI.
  2. If it names a carrier, use that carrier's tier or ask them directly.
  3. If the model supports the USB route, use the Pixel-specific service.

Step 4 — if you do not qualify

Carrier Pixels and units whose carrier will not deal with a second-hand buyer need a supply-side release. For the generations that support it, the USB route is an alternative that does not depend on the carrier at all — which is why it is priced differently.
