Laptop Checks — HP, Dell and Asus Information by Serial
The same resale problem exists for laptops, and the serial number is just as exposing: model, configuration, manufacture date and warranty status are all in the vendor's records. HP, Dell and Asus each publish enough to date a machine and to spot a "new" unit that is actually a refurbished corporate lease return.
Short answer. These checks answer a question that decides what to do next, and they cost cents. Run the identity and lock checks first, then the blacklist check, and only then order an unlock.
What the message actually means
The check returns the configured model (not just the chassis family), the warranty type and end date, and often the country of origin.
Corporate lease returns are the classic misrepresentation: the machine is genuine, but the warranty is a corporate one that the buyer cannot use.
What you are seeing
- A "new" laptop with an expired warranty
- The model does not match the listing (different CPU or screen)
- A corporate warranty the seller cannot transfer
- No record found for the serial
Step 1 — check before you spend
Step 2 — what to do with the answer
- Ask for the serial number before buying.
- Run the brand's check.
- Compare the returned model and warranty against the listing.
The free route fails for one of four reasons, and only the last one needs money: the device is still financed; the account was closed with a balance; the buyer is not the account holder; or the IMEI is reported. Everything else is a paperwork problem the carrier can fix.
A couple of cents per check, and the fastest way to catch a laptop that is a corporate lease return being sold as new — which is a much bigger loss than the check costs.

What does not work
- "A genuine serial means a new machine" — It can be a lease return with a corporate warranty.
- "The model number in the listing is the model" — Serial lookups return the as-built configuration.
Why it can still fail
- Serial not checked.
- Corporate warranty mistaken for consumer warranty.
- Regional model with a different keyboard layout or charger.
