How to Unlock a Spanish Phone — Movistar, Orange and Yoigo Records

Spain is one of the easier European markets: Movistar, Orange and Yoigo all release devices by IMEI, prices are low, and turnarounds are short. The failure mode is brand confusion — Yoigo is a separate record from MasMovil even though they are the same group, and a phone sold as "Movistar" that is actually on the Yoigo record will be refused.

Short answer. Start with the $0.03 check to confirm the lock and the carrier. If you are the account holder and the device meets the carrier’s conditions, the unlock is normally free — the operator’s own page is Movistar Spain support. If you are not, or the carrier refuses, the record has to be released from the supply side, and the services at the bottom of this page are the ones that apply.

What the message actually means

The activation policy is held against the IMEI by the operator. No code is involved for an iPhone.

Most Spanish devices are sold outright, so the paid tiers are cheap and fast compared with financed markets.

The phone is not damaged and it is not stolen by default: the manufacturer holds an activation policy against the IMEI that names the carrier the device may activate on. Until that record changes, every other SIM is refused at activation — Wi-Fi keeps working, which is why a locked handset can look perfectly healthy in a shop.

What you are seeing

Step 1 — check before you spend

  1. Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.
  2. The carrier and SIM lock check ($0.03) to separate Movistar, Orange and Yoigo records.
  3. The blacklist check for second-hand purchases.

Step 2 — what the carrier’s policy says

Spanish carriers release devices on request once the device is paid off and not reported; the request comes from the account holder. Prices are set commercially and are low.

Cancelled contracts with a balance are refused.

Published requirements

The current wording is always on the carrier’s page: Movistar Spain support.

Step 3 — if you qualify, get the free unlock

  1. Identify the brand by IMEI.
  2. Request the unlock from that brand's support.
  3. Restart with the new SIM.

Step 4 — if you do not qualify

The Spanish tiers are among the cheapest in Europe, which makes them the practical route for second-hand devices. Order by brand — Movistar, Orange and Yoigo are separate.
