Verizon Blacklist Unbar: Lost, Stolen and Bad ESN Records
Verizon uses ESN/IMEI-level blacklists with its own reason codes. Some are releasable, some are not, and one supported service explicitly targets the GSMA-side entry raised by Verizon.
Last reviewed 2026-10-26
Verizon calls it a bad ESN; the rest of the industry calls it a blacklist. The mechanism is the same: the carrier database refuses to serve the device, and the reason behind the entry decides whether anything can be done.
Verizon is unusual in that it also maintains GSMA-side entries, which is why some Verizon devices are clean at Verizon but blacklisted worldwide.
Not for
- • Devices reported stolen and subject to a police report.
- • Devices with an active insurance claim owned by someone else.
Reason codes you will encounter
- Lost or stolen (customer report): not releasable commercially.
- Bad ESN from a billing or account dispute: sometimes releasable.
- GSMA entry raised by Verizon while the Verizon-side record looks clean: a specific product covers this case.
- SSN / ZIP association mismatch: the record is tied to a different identity; a separate remediation service handles it.
Check before unbar
- 1Run a GSMA blacklist check for the worldwide view.
- 2Run a Verizon-specific eligibility / status check for the carrier view.
- 3Compare the two: if Verizon is clean but GSMA is flagged, you need the Verizon-raised GSMA unbar rather than a general unbar.
- 4Only then buy the matching unbar listing, and re-check afterwards to confirm the entry cleared.
Note
Verizon unbar results are not always instant. Some clearing paths depend on the carrier's own review queue, so plan for several days.Services used in this guide

Frequently asked questions
Is a bad ESN the same as a blacklist?
Practically yes — Verizon's term for a flagged ESN. The remediation path still depends on the reason code.
Will an unbar make the phone unlocked?
No. Unbar clears the blacklist; the SIM policy is separate. Check both and order whichever is still pending.
Why is my phone clean at Verizon but blacklisted elsewhere?
Verizon maintains entries in the GSMA database as well as its own. A device can be cleared on the Verizon side and still carry a GSMA record.
