Verizon iPhone Unlock: What Actually Locks a Verizon Model
Most 2020-and-later Verizon iPhones ship 60-day unlocked — so a Verizon model that refuses a foreign SIM usually has a different problem. Here is how to tell the two cases apart before paying for an unlock.

Verizon devices are the most misunderstood category in the resale market. Since the 60-day unlocking policy took effect, a Verizon iPhone sold to a customer is normally unlocked automatically about 60 days after purchase. A phone that still says “Verizon” in Carrier Lock is either inside that 60-day window, still carrying a balance, or is not actually a Verizon device.
Because of that, the first step for a “Verizon locked” iPhone is not buying an unlock — it is running an IMEI report to find out what is really blocking the SIM.
Three things people call a “Verizon lock”
- Genuine carrier lock: device still inside the policy window or financed. Needs the carrier channel to release it.
- GSMA blacklist: the IMEI was reported and the network refuses the device. No carrier unlock fixes this — the blacklist must be cleared or the device used on a network that does not query GSMA.
- iCloud / FMI activation lock: the phone is locked to an Apple ID, not to Verizon. This is an Apple activation-lock problem, not a carrier problem.
Important
If the report shows an iCloud activation lock, do not buy a carrier unlock. It will succeed and the phone will still be unusable. How to confirm the real blocker
Doing all three checks costs a fraction of an unlock and saves the whole order when the device turns out to be blacklisted — the most common refund dispute in this category.
- 1Run an Apple SIM lock check first — this returns the lock status and carrier.
- 2Run a GSMA worldwide blacklist check on the same IMEI to rule out a reported device.
- 3Run an iCloud / FMI check to rule out activation lock.
- 4Only if the device is carrier-locked, clean and balance-clear, order the Verizon unlock service for that generation.

Frequently asked questions
Does Verizon lock phones at all?
Verizon postpaid devices are locked for the first 60 days after purchase and are then unlocked automatically, provided the account is in good standing.
My Verizon iPhone says “SIM Not Supported” — is it locked?
Not necessarily. Run an IMEI check: the message is also produced by a blacklisted IMEI or by an iPhone that still expects a Verizon SIM during first-time activation.
Can a Verizon phone be used on AT&T after unlock?
Yes for iPhone XS and later, and for most newer models with eSIM support. Very old Verizon CDMA models may lack the bands needed for a good experience.
