iCloud Activation Lock vs FMI vs MDM: Identify the Lock Before You Buy
iCloud ON, FMI ON, MDM on, Lost Mode — these are four different locks with four different removal paths. Misidentifying which one a device has is the number one cause of failed removals.

Apple has several independent locks, and a device can carry more than one at the same time. Before ordering any removal service, you need to know exactly which locks are active — the services are not interchangeable, and buying the wrong one is the most common wasted order on the platform.
The four locks, defined
- iCloud Activation Lock: the device is bound to an Apple ID. After a factory reset it asks for that Apple ID’s password.
- Find My iPhone (FMI): a prerequisite for activation lock — FMI ON means Find My is enabled and activation lock is armed.
- MDM / supervision: the device is enrolled in a Mobile Device Management profile (corporate or school). It shows a remote-management profile in Settings and cannot be removed normally.
- Lost Mode: the owner has marked the device lost; a message appears on the lock screen. This is an owner-controlled state, not a service you can order.
Which check to run
- iPhone / iPad / Watch: iCloud clean/lost check — returns iCloud status and whether the device is clean or reported.
- iPhone / iPad / Mac: iCloud ON/OFF (FMI) check — a quick boolean used by resellers before a purchase.
- MDM: dedicated MDM lock check (and the emergency variant when you need a fast answer).
- Combined: MDM + iCloud check in one order when you do not know which lock the device has.
Important
Note the input type for each service: some accept an IMEI only, some accept an IMEI or Apple serial number, and iPad/Watch devices often need the serial. Submitting the wrong identifier returns “not found”.Choosing the removal path
If the device is a corporate asset that was legitimately retired, ask the company to release it: MDM removal on a device the admin will not release is a legal grey area and the profile can be re-pushed as soon as the device contacts the MDM server.
- 1iCloud ON with cellular (iPhone / iPad): use the iCloud activation lock removal service for that device class.
- 2MacBook / iMac: use the Mac-specific iCloud / FMI removal service — the iOS procedure does not apply.
- 3MDM lock only (no activation lock): use the MDM removal service; it removes the management profile without touching the OS.
- 4MDM + iCloud both active: clear the MDM first, then the activation lock — in that order.

Frequently asked questions
Does an iCloud unlock remove the Apple ID?
An activation-lock removal service bypasses the activation prompt so the device can be set up. It does not change the previous owner’s Apple account.
Can I remove MDM without a factory reset?
A proper MDM removal releases the supervision so the profile no longer enforces management, which can be done remotely by IMEI or serial without erasing the device.
How do I know if a device has MDM?
Run the MDM lock check on the IMEI or serial. On the device itself, a supervised device shows a Remote Management screen after reset.
