iPhone Unlock
T-Mobile Fully Paid-Off iPhone Unlock by IMEI
If a T-Mobile iPhone is fully paid off, the unlock is the simple case — but T-Mobile splits listings by generation, and picking the wrong generation is the usual failure.
Last reviewed 2026-10-26
A fully paid-off T-Mobile device has no balance flag, so the unlock goes through the standard channel. The complication is that the catalog splits T-Mobile unlocks by device generation, and each listing covers a range that is not always obvious from the title.
This page maps generation to listing so the order lands in the right bucket the first time.
Generation to listing
- iPhone 4 / 4s / 5 / 5s / 6 / 7 / 8 / X / XS / SE / 11 / 12 family: the legacy-generation listing. Cheap and fast, but it will reject a modern device.
- iPhone 13 through 16e / 16 Plus / 16 Pro Max: the mid-range listing.
- iPhone 17 / Air / 17 Pro Max / 17e: the current-generation listing.
- Samsung, Pixel, Motorola and generic Android on T-Mobile: a separate generic listing, not the iPhone one.
Note
Check Settings → General → About → Model Name before ordering. “iPhone 16e” and “iPhone 16” are different listings on several tiers. The paid-off proof problem
T-Mobile asks for the device to be paid off and the line to have reached a minimum service period. A paid-off device sold second-hand normally still satisfies both, because the requirement is evaluated against the device record, not against who holds the account now.
- The device must not be reported lost or stolen.
- The line must not be suspended for non-payment at the moment of processing.
- The IMEI must be the primary IMEI, not the secondary eSIM IMEI2 of a different device.
After the unlock
- 1Restart the phone with a non-T-Mobile SIM inserted.
- 2Open Settings → General → About and confirm Carrier Lock reads “No SIM restrictions”.
- 3Test a call and mobile data on the new network before handing the device on.
- 4If the phone still shows the T-Mobile setup carrier screen, erase and set up again — the policy is cached locally.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be the T-Mobile account holder?
No. IMEI-based unlocking does not require account access, which is what makes second-hand devices workable.
What happens if the line is suspended?
A line suspended for non-payment behaves like a past-due case. Clear the balance or use a premium listing that explicitly supports that state.
Is the unlock permanent?
Yes. The activation policy change is permanent for the IMEI and survives updates and factory resets.
