iPhone Unlock
Unlock an AT&T iPhone That Is No Longer Active on the Account
A second-hand AT&T iPhone is often no longer active on its original line, which is normal and usually easier than a past-due device. Here is how that state is handled.

“No longer active” simply means the device is no longer on a live AT&T line. A used iPhone sold after the owner cancelled or moved to another carrier will almost always be in this state, and it is not a red flag on its own.
What matters is the balance attached to the record: inactive with a cleared balance is straightforward; inactive with an unpaid installment is a past-due case.
Inactive vs. past due vs. account2 locked
- No longer active: the line is closed or ported out. The balance may or may not be cleared.
- Past due: there is an outstanding balance on the device or the account.
- Account2 locked: the device is linked to a second AT&T account, which needs its own channel.
- Clean and eligible: the standard unlock path applies.
Note
“Account2 locked” is a common resale condition: the device was activated, deactivated and re-registered. It needs its own service — the plain inactive service will report back as not eligible.Ordering flow
- 1Check the IMEI to confirm AT&T and read the current lock status.
- 2Ask the previous owner whether the installment plan was completed — if not, treat it as past due before ordering.
- 3Choose the inactive / account2 service if that is the reported state.
- 4After completion, insert a foreign SIM and restart the phone; Settings → General → About should show “No SIM restrictions”.

Frequently asked questions
Does being inactive make the phone unlockable for free?
Deactivation alone does not release the SIM policy. The device record still must show a paid-off device, which is why a third-party service is often needed.
Can the previous owner re-lock the phone?
Once the activation policy is updated to unlocked, that change is permanent for the IMEI. It is not reverted by the previous owner.
How do I know it is account2 locked?
The carrier check result or a rejected order reason will name it. Listings that explicitly support that state succeed where the generic service fails.
